Making FLIQLO Work On Vista x86_64

If you guys don’t know what FLIQLO is then you’re a bit out of date, FLIQLO is an aesthetically pleasing screen saver for both Windows and Macs written by Yuji Adachi. The latest version is 1.1  and it was released on November 01, 2006. So it’s a couple of months earlier than the retail version of Windows Vista which was released on the first quarter of 2007. So what do those release dates got to do with my post? Well it just means that FLIQLO 1.1 wasn’t tested on Vista, specifically Vista’s 64 bit edition and that could only mean one thing, there’s a 50/50 chance that it might work on Vista x86_64 or not and unfortunately it’s the latter. Don’t worry though as the fix is relatively easy as it’s just a bunch of cut n’ paste!

Now assuming that you already downloaded fliqlo_110.exe and you’ve already extracted and installed the screen saver, you will notice that it’ll show up on the list of screen savers the very first time it’s installed. However once you close the Screen Saver Settings window and you open it again it’s gone! So you would have probably clicked ran FLIQLO_setup.exe again but this time it’ll say that it’s already installed and it asks you if you want to overwrite it or not. Thinking that you probably messed up the first time you install it again by overwriting the old files. You open up your Screen Saver Settings window, close it and open it again only to find out that it’s gone…again! Sigh…

So what the heck just happened? Well it turns out that the first time you installed FLIQLO 1.1 it placed the files in the \Windows\SysWOW64\ directory, which isn’t the place you want FLIQLO installed if you want it to show up in your Screen Saver Settings window.

So what do you do?

Well, all you have to do is copy the FLIQLO dirfliqlo_110.swf, and FLIQLO.scr to \Windows\System32\ and that’s it! You should now be able to see FLIQLO in the screen savers list no matter how many times you open and close it! Please take note that I said copy and not cut or move them over. That means all those three files must exist in both directories! Otherwise you’ll get a message that the screensaver has been partially uninstalled.

I followed the instructions, but when I opened the screensavers panel, it does show up on the selection list. however, on the preview monitor graphic (where you are supposed to see a sample or logo of the screensaver), it says “This screen saver has been partially uninstalled. Restart your computer to completely remove it”. Of course, restarting does nothing to remove it, nor does it work either.

It’s Vista 64bit SP1 Ultimate. Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
